Silencer for the interpreter in court.  

This device is great for hearings and trials! I had a client that would always request I bring this device to all the trials.

It functions as a mask that covers the interpreter’s mouth and muffles his/her voice. This allows the attorneys to concentrate a little better and not have to hear the interpreter’s constant talking in the background.

It does not cancel out the voice completely, but it helps attenuate it.

The silencer goes attached to a transmitter and the client gets a receiver and a headphone or earbud to listen along.

Notice this can only be used for hearings and trials where the person will be listening to an interpreter translating in simultaneous mode. We may not use this device when we are interpreting for a witness on the stand or in depositions. In depositions, interpreters must interpret out load to be heard in both languages and cannot interpret simultaneously so as to not distract the court reporter.

Cons of using this device.

It looks weird. If you are not distracted by the interpreter’s voice, you and others in the courtroom may be distracted by the strange device.

I guess it is an acquired taste.

Pros of the silencer

Other than the reduced noise mentioned above, the interpreter gets the added benefit of being able to hear better, without your own voice interfering. This results in a better and more complete rendition, simply because you miss fewer words.

I have used the device countless times at NBC Universal and Telemundo Studios as well, in the control rooms, to interpret for the executive producers of different shows. These rooms are usually playing floor audio and get extremely loud. The mask has allowed me to interpret with a clear voice and without the background music. This would have otherwise been impossible.
